Shelfari Joins the Amazon Superfamily

Shelfari, social networking through books, has joined the Amazon superfamily. Amazon has supported the necessary software for some time—see Noted or Quoted on this blog—so the transition should be smooth and unremarkable, other than it's another independent site coming under the Amazon aegis.

Spielburg Still the First Tin Tin Director

Despite some confusion at Herge Studios, it is Steven Spielburg who will direct the first Tin Tin film. Peter Jackson will a producer for the first then direct later films in the projected series.

Borders Does Better

The latest financial report on the troubled bookseller reveals that sales are still not what the company might wish but also that debt is coming under control. "We have not only improved profitability, but also substantially reduced debt, improved cash flow and significantly strengthened our balance sheet," said Borders Group Chief Executive Officer George Jones. "Our focus on expense reduction, inventory management and improved gross margin is clearly working, and we have managed to show substantial improvement in a very difficult retail environment. We will maintain this discipline and continue to manage the company prudently while also addressing the need to improve the top line." The price for Borders shares moved up substantially on the news.

Virgin Comics Moves to LA

In a surprise, unannounced move, Virgin Comics shut down its NYC offices and laid off the its eight staff members. It was later announced they would be re-opening in LA. An international joint venture between Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and the India-based comics publisher Gotham Entertainment, affect the operations of Gotham Entertainment, the India-based partner which produces comics targeted for the South Asian consumer market.
