Although the matter may seem academic to outsiders, within genre being defined as a qualifying press for membership or awards purposes is of great concern to authors and publishers. RWA, Romance Writers of America, and Tsaba House remain locked in disagreement following the publisher's contention last week that the writer's organization discriminates against small presses. RWA considers Tsaba to be a vanity publisher because its standard contract contains clauses that require authors to pay for what many publishers consider the cost of doing business. RWA bars publishers who charge nonstandard fees from its programs and contests, and has issued a statement about the dispute.
