Building Up The Golden Compass

With the Narnia films proving to be something of a financial disappointment compared to LOTR, they are hard at work promoting The Golden Compass. It is not clear that the financing will be there for the following films if the first does not break big decisively. The film opens in the UK on December 5th; on the 7th in the rest of the world. One possible problem for the film is that it can be interpreted as having an anti-Christian message. Another is the fear that the particular flavor of the books may have been diluted in an effort not to offend. However, a look at the website guarantees one thing: it's stunning to look at.

Amazon Buyer's Records Subject of Compromise

Federal prosecutors have accepted a judge-brokered compromise that denies them direct access to the buying records of Amazon's customers. "Well-founded or not, rumors of an Orwellian federal criminal investigation into the reading habits of Amazon's customers could frighten countless potential customers into canceling planned online book purchases," the judge said in his ruling, which was unsealed last week.

Robin Hobb has won the Endeavour Award for her book, Forest Mage.

Verity Lambert, 71

Verity Lambert, the first producer of Doctor Who, died the day before the long-running show's forty-fourth anniversary. At the time she took charge of the show, she was both the BBC's first female producer and the youngest. She received an OBE in 2002 for her services to film and television.
