Christopher Priest's 1996 World Fantasy Award winner, The Prestige, has made it into the movies and is due for a fall 2006 release with an all star cast: Hugh Jackman as Rupert Angier, Christian Bale as Alfred Borden, David Bowie as Nikola Tesla, Michael Caine as Cutter, and Scarlett Johansson as Oliva. The title refers to the surprise that caps a successful trick in stage magic. First, the pledge, when the audience sees something ordinary. Second, the turn, when the audience sees it do something extraordinary. Third, the prestige, the twist, the ending that cannot be explained. As two types of magic—stage and what might be, must be, could it be real—duel in late nineteenth century London, passions run high enough for murder. It's possible that the script has tightened up the plot to produce something more engrossing than the book, which was more fun if you didn't figure out where the story had to be going: The trailer certainly looks most promising.
