Octavia Butler died of a head injury following a fall Saturday, February 25, 2006. One of the genre's distinguished writers and recipient of awards both within and without the field, she will be missed, as will the books she will never write. She looked forward to being an old writer of eighty, as she enjoyed looking back to being a young writer of ten. Her unique, imaginative voice was heard far beyond the bounds of science fiction. For a January 2006 interview with her, see NYC Indymedia. The interview concludes, speaking of the author's newest work, Fledgling, "The author’s creative powers are in full bloom, as she still has the abilities to pile darkness upon the reader, only to allow the final light of self-discovery. " See obituary for her adopted hometown paper's announcement of her death and appreciation of her life and work.
